Being kind is ALWAYS in style and it's never too early to get your kiddos in on the kindness bandwagon, so when we saw this month's hand-lettered design from Arlena over at Bossy Brushstrokes, we knew just the project we wanted to create...
DIY the mama + mini sweatshirts for you and your tiny sidekick!
So, let's get started!
- 2 blank shirts (We used a plain adult sweatshirt and a plain toddler sweatshirt)
- Cutting machine (we used a Cricut Maker)
- Color Chimp Luxe Heat Transfer Vinyl (we used white)
- Craftey Weeding Tool Set
- Heat Press or Iron
- Be a kind human SVG cut file (download here)
Step 1: Design
Upload the "Be a kind human" SVG file to Design Space or Silhouette Studio. If you are making a mama + mini project, you'll want to duplicate the cut file so there are two of them.
Then resize the cut files to fit your shirts. We sized our files to 7 inches wide to fit our adult shirt and 5 inches wide to fit our toddler shirt.
Step 2: Cutting
Place the vinyl on your mat, with the shiny side facing down (that's the side with the carrier sheet).
Don't forget, when working with HTV you ALWAYS need to mirror your design before you begin cutting!
Press the GO button and start cutting.
Step 3: Weeding
Once your machine is done cutting, use your weeding tool to remove all of the excess HTV from your design.
We recommend using your weeding tool to remove the smaller pieces (like the insides of the letters) first and then going back in to pull away the larger outside portion of the design with your fingers.
Pro Tip: Roll up a piece of tape, sticky side out, and place it on your work surface. Then use it as a sticky landing pad to catch all of your scraps as you weed. This super simple hack makes clean up a breeze!
Step 4: Place Your Designs
To find the perfect center placement for your designs, start by folding your shirt in half and pressing a centerline down the middle with your heat press or iron.
Next, fold your weeded design in half and press a crease into the top and bottom of the carrier sheet with your fingers.
You will then be able to line up the center creases in your carrier sheet with the center crease you pressed into your shirt, leaving you with perfectly centered design placement every. single. time.
Step 5: Press Your Designs
Now it's time to apply the HTV.
Press with medium pressure for 5 seconds at 320 degrees until the design fully adheres to the fabric (Note: be sure to follow the pressing instructions for the brand and type of heat transfer vinyl you are using).
Our Color Chimp Luxe is a hot peel heat transfer vinyl, so you can peel the carrier sheet away immediately.
Optional: Once you've peeled away the carrier sheet, cover your design with a Teflon sheet or thin cotton cloth and repress for an additional 3-5 seconds.
Repeat steps 3 - 5 for the second transfer.
Step 7: Enjoy!
That's it, you're finished!
Now grab your mini-me, throw on your new sweatshirts, and head out into the world spreading a little extra kindness where ever you go!
