Hey there!! It’s Megan from Lovebird Heartworks and I am SO ready for these summer months! Are you? In preparation of these warmer temperatures, I made my daughter a quick little layered tank so she can “Play It Cool” all summer long!! I’m so excited to share this design and project with you, let’s get started!!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Play It Cool SVG (you can download it here)
- Cricut Maker (or other die-cutting machine)
- Cutting Mat
- Color Chimp Luxe HTV - I’m using colors from the Spring Bundle
- Color Chimp Luxe HTV - in Black
- Weeding Tool
- Cricut Easy Press (or other heating element)
- Cricut Easy Press Mat
- Tank Top (or other item you’d love to customize)
- Optional: Heat Resistant Tape - to hold smaller pieces of HTV in place
Step 1: Download the SVG. Upload into Design Space or Cutting Software.
Make sure to resize your project before you get ready to make your cuts. For this tank top, I sized the SVG to 5.75”.
Step 2: Optional, yet super convenient.
I like to pre-cut my HTV so that I can get them all on one cutting mat. I prefer this method, especially when working with multiple layers and colors. I use the SnapMat feature in Cricut Design Space iphone/ipad app for this step.
Step 3: Cut then Weed your Heat Transfer Vinyl.
Always remember to put your HTV on the mat shiny side down and don’t forget to MIRROR your design for each mat.
Step 4: Preheat your Garment.
Just a heads up: when you apply heat to some highly pigmented shirts the colors will get darker, just play it cool, the color will return to normal after the shirt cools down. You’ll see the dark square in the following photos and notice in the final picture the shirt has had a chance to cool so the colors have returned to normal.
Step 5: Layering and Heat Pressing the Design.
I started by laying down the “PLAY IT” and the 4 popsicle sticks, just make sure you leave enough room for the popsicles to fit. For the Color Chimp Luxe HTV I heat pressed at 265º for 5 seconds each layer. Be sure to consult the Heat Press Settings for your particular HTV and fabric combination.
After I heat pressed and peeled off the carrier sheet of the first layer I applied the 1st and 3rd popsicles. If you would like to trim your pieces closer you can press them all at one time, this is when you may want to use something like Heat Resistant tape to keep your pieces right where you want them as you apply heat/pressure to your garment.
Next, I applied the 2nd and 4th popsicles.
Lastly, apply the “COOL” on top of all the popsicles.
That’s it!! How cool is that?! I loved making this design and project for you!! I know that I’ll be making myself a twinning tank to match my daughter and I may even make some summer decor out of adhesive vinyl with this same design. SO many possibilities!!
I’d love to see what you create!! Feel free to tag me @lovebird_heartworks in your creations on Instagram if this has inspired you to PLAY IT COOL this summer!!
