Alison from Simply Alison is back on the blog sharing a step-by-step tutorial on how to use our Color Chimp Glitter HTV to decorate an easy no-sew wall banner that is perfect for decorating your home this winter! For more project ideas and inspiration, be sure to check out the Craftey Community!
This month I was feeling super ambitious and wanted to make a banner to put my HTV on. I’m not good at sewing so I found hemming adhesive to make the banner instead. It worked out perfectly and I have gotten a few comments from house guests asking where I bought my cute banner. The surprise on people’s faces when I tell them I made it seriously makes my day. Plus, the free SVG is perfect for these cold winter months that have suddenly hit us.
- Craftey Color Chimp Glitter HTV
- Cricut or other cutting machine (I use a Cricut Explorer Air 2 in this tutorial)
- 12x12 Cutting mat
- Weeding Tool
- Any fabric or canvas fabric (I bought mine from Amazon and it was 1 yard)
- Hem Iron-On Adhesive (I used this one- HeatnBond)
- Iron or Heat Press
- Branch (Go outside and find a branch!)
- Twine or yarn
- Baby its Cold Outside free SVG file (download it here)
Let’s start with the banner. There are two shapes you can make your banner into. A simple square or pentagon shape. In this tutorial, I’ll be making a pentagon shape. Choose the shape you’d like.
You can cut the banner at any size and length you’d like. Fold your fabric at the length you’d like (mine was 13.75 inches). Then measure the width and cut (my width was about 12.5 inches). Cut it out. I cut it a little bigger than normal because we are going to use the hem adhesive to stick the sides together.
Fold the banner length-wise (edge to edge... like a hotdog, not a hamburger). Put a ruler on the cut edge (not the folded edge) and turn it at an angle, then draw a line (it should look like a triangle). Now cut the line you just made. Unfold. It’s looking more like a banner now.
Turn on your iron to medium-high heat with no steam.
Now let’s cut and attach the hem adhesive. Unfold your fabric. Measure about an inch below your fabric fold and cut the hem adhesive. Measure about an inch and a half below on the opposite side and cut the hem adhesive. Also, cut the hem adhesive for the bottom part.
Fold your fabric back over so the pieces are together and take the iron and go over the hem adhesive for about 3-5 seconds. Make sure to iron each part of adhesive.
Let it cool a bit. Now pull the banner inside out and go over the edges one more time.
Upload the free SVG cut file into Cricut Design Space And resize to fit your fabric. (I sized mine to 7.5 x 9 (you can make this bigger or smaller based on the item you’re applying this to)
Place the HTV on your cutting mat shiny side down. Before cutting make sure you have mirrored the image!!! Cut the HTV with your cutting machine.
Weed the lettering and don’t forget to weed out the middle of certain letters like a,e, l, d, and o.
Place the HTV down and iron it on. I turn my iron on high and go over the HTV for about 45 seconds with heavy pressure. I do check to make sure the HTV is fusing with the fabric. If it isn’t I will go back over it for a couple of seconds. Peel the plastic sheet off.
Feed the branch through the top of the banner and add twine or yarn on each side of the branch. You did it!
I hope you love this tutorial as much as I loved making it.
