Hey y'all! I am super excited to #GetCraftey with you today. I live in the South and college football is pretty serious business down here. Our fall weekends revolve around football. We pull out our Sunday best for tailgating on Saturday and you do NOT want to be around my husband if his team loses--haha! I created a DIY chalkboard for our favorite team's 2019 schedule and I loved how it turned out so much, I went ahead and created next year's schedule too just so I could blog the process! This chalkboard can be personalized to showcase the schedule of your favorite team and with the various colors of adhesive vinyl offered at Craftey, the possibilities are endless.
Let's go, team! Here is what you will need:
- White Matte Oracal 631
- Gold Chrome Polish Adhesive Vinyl
- Transfer Tape
- Weeding Tool
- 16x20 Frame (this is the one I used but with a white frame)
- Chalked Spray Paint in Charcoal
- Silhouette Cameo or similar machine
I wanted this to have the chalkboard feel but also wanted to be able to remove the vinyl so that I could reuse the board year after year. I spray painted one side of the plexiglass from my frame with this charcoal colored spray paint. Once it had dried, I placed the side of the plexiglass that had not been painted outward in the frame. This worked perfectly because it looks like a chalkboard, but the vinyl can be more easily removed from the plexiglass than from the spray-painted side.
Now, you will want to get your schedule design set up in the Silhouette Studio. I used Desmond font and Maddie font. I changed the size of my page in the Studio to 16x20 just to be sure that everything would be sized to scale.
Just keep in mind that the Cameo can only cut up to 12" wide, so make sure to turn your cut border on before you begin to make your cuts. For each cut, just arrange your selected portion to fit within the cut border.
I used the Gold Chrome for my first cut. Select "no cut" on everything but what you are cutting at that time. Load your vinyl on your cutting mat and feed into the machine.
Continue to move the pieces of your design around until you have made all of your cuts. Although the gold adhesive is not technically removable, I decided to take my chances because it is just too pretty to only use for the top of the design! I used the removable white Oracal 631 for the opponents and the year and the gold chrome for the "Alabama football" and the dates.
Make all of your cuts and weed away the excess vinyl using your weeding tool.
Now, pull out your transfer tape and cover each portion of your design. Be sure to rub over the transfer type to ensure that the vinyl is fully adhered for when you begin to pull it away.
Place the transfer tape covered vinyl on your chalkboard, give it a good rub and slowly peel back the transfer tape.
Repeat until each section of your design has been added.
I love how this turned out and I am actually super excited that I have checked an item off my to-do list for next football season!
Which team will you be cheering on? I would love to see the way you personalize the chalkboard for your favorite team! Share your project within the Craftey community so we can check out your creation.
