In this crazy world we live in today, sometimes you need to empower others or remind yourself “YOU ARE”… This message brings me back to the movie “The HELP” where Aibileen tells the little girl she cares for, “You is Kind, You is Smart, You is Important.” There is never a wrong time to let others know how special they really are. With a little bit of inspiration from Aibileen’s sweet words, I created this shirt. I can see this image on a card, a wood sign, you name it.Tools + Materials Needed For This Project:

- Color Chimp Glitter 10” X 20” Heat Transfer Vinyl in Neon Pink

- Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
- Weeding Tool
- Measuring Tape
- Lint Roller
- Cricut EasyPress (or heat source)
- Cricut EasyPress Mat
- Cricut Iron-on Protective Sheet (a thin towel works great too)
CREATE IMAGE –
Open a NEW canvas in Cricut Design Space. Add the word “You Are” in a TEXT box and select the font Autumn in November. You can download the font here.Next, we need to move the letters closer to one another so they are touching and weld them. You can do this by using the down arrow under “Letter Space” or what I like to do is “Ungroup” my letters and move them on my own. This allows me the freedom to move the letters how I want them to look. Once you “Ungroup” your word you will now notice that you have individual letters being shown on the right hand side. Click on the letter “O” and move it to the left so it touches the “Y”. An easy way to accomplish this is by using your left arrow key. If the letter overlaps too much or is not in the spot you would like it, adjust it with your mouse. Continue to do this for the remainder of the letters. Now you can “Weld.” Select the word “You” and click “Weld” in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. You will notice the word “You” turns into a Weld result instead of just text in the right-hand column. Continue these steps for the word “Are.”NOTE: If you find that your open spaces in letters fill completely in, it is because your letters are too close together or overlapping improperly and need to be adjusted. You can unweld the letter, adjust and try welding once again. Continue this step until the space is open.
Below is an example of the open space in the letter “R” that was filled in because my letters were overlapping improperly.Once you “Weld” something together and SAVE it you CANNOT UNWELD it. You might want to make a duplicate of the word or image you are working with before you actually hit SAVE.
Move the word “Are” so that the “A” is centered below the “o” and the “u.” Select both words and weld them together.Create a new text box and in all CAPS with 3 spaces between each word, type the words KIND, STRONG, CAPABLE, LOVED, WORTHY, IMPORTANT. Change the font to Asparagus Sprouts. You can download the font here. *NOTE: If you are using Design Space on a Mac, this font will not work for you due to a Design Space bug. You can use any of the Cricut fonts for this step. We like the Cricut font, Kayden for this project. Please note that you will also need to adjust your curve amount depending on the font you choose.*You will now create a circle with the words by highlighting the words, clicking on “Curve”, typing 8.4 in the box and hitting ENTER.Highlight your curved words and reposition them so the word “IMPORTANT” is centered at the top. You can do this by selecting your half arrowed circle and arranging your image appropriately. Move “You Are” to the center of the curved words and adjust the height to 5” tall. To center, highlight both images, hit Align and Center. To add the heart, you will need to download the font “Heart Shapes” or use a heart of your choice. Add new text and the letter “H.” This particular font is all hearts so each upper and lower case letter corresponds with a heart style. Resize the heart to have a height of 0.6. Change the color to pink, duplicate the heart and place in the center between each word.To make final sizing corrections and to get ready to cut, highlight all the pink hearts by selecting each one and “ATTACH” them.Select your 5 curved words + your hearts and resize to 9” wide.Select “You Are” + curved words and Align to Center. Then “Attach” so you will have only one cut of black HTV.
*If you select ALL and align everything it will adjust the location of the hearts and they will be off.
YOU’RE READY TO “MAKE IT” –
Select the green “Make It” button. Mirror both images in the left-hand column by selecting each mat and clicking on the circle to the right of “Mirror.” Click Continue. Select your cutting machine, identify materials (such as iron on or glitter iron on).Place iron on shiny side down onto Cricut mat. Load mat into machine by pushing blinking arrows and the “C” to cut. Repeat steps for both images.
Gently remove your HTV from the mat. Take your wedding tool and remove the excess material from the carrier sheet. You may want to trim your carrier sheet to make it more manageable when pressing.
PRESSING YOUR IMAGES –
Grab your iron or Cricut EasyPress and set to desired heat. When using my EasyPress I always check the Quick Reference Guide online for updated temperatures. DO NOT use steam if using a regular iron.
To get the center of your shirt, fold in half and use your EasyPress to make a crease line. I lint roll my shirts and measure roughly 3” down from the neckline to place my image.Place the “You Are” image on the shirt and apply heat. Color Chimp Essentials HTV can be peeled off when warm but before you remove the carrier sheet make sure the HTV has adhered to the shirt. Place your hearts in the desired area but before you add heat use a protective sheet or thin towel so you don’t damage your first image.
YOU’RE FINISHED –
YAY!!! That was a lot of learning right there. We covered ungrouping, arranging letters, welding, welding gone wrong, curving letters, attaching, sizing, aligning and downloading fonts. I could be missing something too. I hope that you have learned a great deal from this project and are empowered to make something else. Always remember YOU ARE…..
Happy Crafting Friends!!
